The Personal Essay Experience

I used to write in a journal a lot.  Almost everyday, after school or before I went to bed I'd whip out the extra spiral notebook I'd accidentally purchased during school supply shopping and write about my day.  A lot of it was summary, but days that had been really rough or times that I was really emotional and I came to my worn out notebook for solace I just unloaded.  It wasn't preconceived at all.  It was like fast writing that we've done in class, it was bad writing.  But it evoked some pretty good stuff.  Some of the things I wrote down in my 8th grade journal will stick with me for a very long time.
So I'm really excited for the personal essays.  From reading the chapter about writing personal essays it sounds challenging, but it also sounds like a healthy dose of reflection.  It'll be nice to go back and forth from the sea of experience to that mountain of reflection.
